Last Sunday the sermon was about peace in the midst of chaos.
The pastor told us about an art competition that took place a few years ago.
Artists were given an abstract idea and were told to paint it. This time, the abstract idea was peace. They were given some time to create a piece.
He had us stop a minute and think of how we would paint peace.
Would it be a dewy meadow, a sunset, a calm river?
It would be for most of us.
He went on to tell us that almost all the artists painted something that looked like you find in a motel.
But, the winner painted this, entitled “Peace”:
He drew lightening and thunder. He drew rapids raging. He drew chaos.
But then we took a closer look to find the reason why he won.
A little bitty bird, safe in the middle of all the chaos.
The artist knew “peace is not an absence of chaos, peace is refuge in the midst of it.”
And so he won.
Just like this bird found peace in the storm, we find God as our Refuge in the storm.
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.”-Psalm 46:1-3
